If you play golf in Philadelphia, New York or Boston, you already know how the calendar works. Somewhere around Halloween, the season starts to shrink. Frost delays get longer. Courses start closing. By January, most Northeast golfers are hitting balls into a net in the garage and counting the weeks until spring.
Here is the good news: you do not have to wait. A day’s drive down I-95, the weather in eastern North Carolina stays golf-friendly for most of the winter. And Belmont Lake Golf Club in Rocky Mount sits just five minutes off I-95 at Exit 138, right on the way to the places Northeast golfers already love to go: Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst and Hilton Head.

How North Carolina Winter Weather Compares to the Northeast
The difference is bigger than most golfers expect. In a typical January, afternoon highs in Boston hover in the mid-30s, and New York and Philadelphia sit right around 40. In Rocky Mount, average highs land around 50 in the heart of winter and climb into the mid-50s in December and February. November and March often bring days in the 60s.
That is the difference between a closed course and a comfortable round in a quarter-zip. North Carolina winters still have the occasional cold snap or frosty morning, but snow that sticks is rare, and most weeks offer plenty of playable days. A late-morning tee time usually means a clear, crisp round with the sun on your back.
Belmont Lake Is Built for the Drive South
Northeast golfers who head south in the winter tend to do it one of two ways: a buddy trip to a golf destination, or a longer stay as a part-time resident. Belmont Lake works for both.
- From Philadelphia: roughly five and a half hours to Rocky Mount, making Belmont Lake a natural first-day round.
- From New York: about seven and a half hours, the perfect place to stretch your legs and play 18 before the final push south.
- From Boston: a long haul, which is exactly why breaking the trip up with a round at Belmont Lake makes sense.
From Rocky Mount, Pinehurst is under two hours away, Myrtle Beach is about three, and Hilton Head is roughly five, all with an easy route back to I-95.
2026 Was a Great Year on the Course
This past year was one of the best we have seen for course conditions and playability. Our G-12 Champion Bermuda greens rolled true all season, the fairways filled in beautifully, and golfers kept telling us the course was in the best shape they could remember. The new photos in our gallery tell the story better than we can.

Designed by David Johnson Golf Design of Atlanta, Belmont Lake plays from five sets of tees, from about 4,900 to just over 7,000 yards, so everyone in your group gets a fair test. It is one of the reasons GolfPass golfers voted Belmont Lake a Top 20 golf course in North Carolina.
